Treasureing Time - VOYIS [Voyage to Inner Spirit]

Basically this design is focused of SELF discovery. With each layer the user must uncover the beautiful core, this is a metaphor for the number of obstacles one must face when on their own personal journey to self discovery.

I played with different forms but the SPHERES natural ergonomics prved to much more sustainable.

Video Reflection Six: Designing Dream Machines

Designer as designers should be able to create WHATEVER they want and HOWEVER they like but on ther other hand in this world, nothing can go 100% our way. So the importance of collaborating with the client is essential for the well being of the design firm. This video exposed to me how naive clients can be by not even bothering to check up on the design process of the design brief then have the nerve to complain about the final outcome, which is quite repulsive.

The design processes were quite interesting despite the client's naivety. The ways in which designers brainstorm ideas for new products reminds myself of past projects where we had to collaborate as much as we could to finalise a design. This problem solving would aid me in my years to come as a future industrial designer.

Anyway with this said it is vital to do market research and product research in order to satisfy the client's needs. For instance the research conducted in India revealed the significance of market research, for in the Western world sleeker bikes are more fashionable whereas the more rigid form is more suited in the Indian environment.

Bad Design - Lamp

This lamp is a bad design for numerous reasons. Firstly it seems as though the lamp has not even been finished for there are holes missing where screws are meant to be in place and it is very unsturdy creating a hazardous situation. The main problem of the lamp is the lamp head.

Although it appears to be stable the actual connections of the lamp head are ridiculously clumsy. For instance when the top lamp shade is taken off to remove a busted light bulb the bottom lamp shade is flimsy and unstable for there is no support from the stand.

Furthermore the ring [circled below] is the lampshade's only support of staying upright. This may have been a great support system HOWEVER the ring is screwed into the pole with only one screw and on one side of the rod, which makes the ring lopsided hence the whole lamp head lopsided.

Not only is the bottom lamp shade faulty, the top one is too. As shown below there is a hole for screw to be inserted on the top lamp shade, HOWEVER in the pciture below there is no hole for the screw to pass through which is to stablise the top lamp shade! By the way this stupid lamp was given as a gift, I would never buy this!

Suggestions for improvements are firstly, create more stability to reduce to hazardous nature of this lamp. To do this I suggest creating more screws and ACTUAL holes for these screws to go into.

Secondly the actual lamp shades should be able to lock into place so no lopsidedness could occur.

Postal Presents

The purpose of designing the colander is not only to drain pasta, noodles etc. It also brings a about message of "I'm there". Couples like to cook and make meals together, which in turn makes the meal THAT much more delicious and has alot more sentimental value. So by creating this foldable colander I tried to capture that essence of cooking with a loved one. In addition the sender can slip a little letter where the slots in the handles are to enhance the pleasant surprise.

I designed this colander with ORIGAMI as the basis. I believed it is a very convenient method of packaging a 3D form in 2D. I broke down the square piece of material to a very different cutting diagram for too many folds would hinder the "pleasantness" in the surprise. So therefore I applied a tab and slot system along with origami folds. This made the assemblage much simpler than all folds.
